Crew and passengers of burned Dutch ship Nieuwe Holland saved according to the Dutch newspaper Nieuwe Courant van Den Helder dated 23 July 1864

An item dated Den Helder, Netherlands the 22nd reported that captain F.J. Cherpion of the bark ship Joan underway from Rotterdam, Netherlands towards Padang, Dutch East Indies after his arrival at Bahia, Brazil reported that in the morning of 15 June they sighted a burning ship on 2.30 North latitude and 27.30 East longitude. Theu approached the ship which was the Nieuw Holland captain W. Witting underway from Amsterdam, Netherlands towards Batavia, Dutch East Indies with a crew of 24 men and furthermore two passengers and a woman from Java, Dutch East Indies. With a boat were the passengers and part of the crew transported to the Joan. Her captain stayed behind with the rest of the crew trying to save his ship. At 14.00 o’clock they were also forced to abandon the ship. Just after they left it the mainmast fell overboard and she was completely burned. The Joan arrived the 25th at Bahia to set the crew of the Nieuw Holland on land and departed the 28th with the 2 passengers and the woman of Java towards Batavia.
