Belgian brig of war Duc de Brabant underway towards Africa according to the Dutch newspaper Nieuwe Rotterdamsche courant dated 14 December 1854

An item dated Brussel, Belgium 14th reported the departure from Antwerp, Belgium of the Belgian brig of war Duc de Brabant heading for Africa. Bringing two native princes back to their own country. In the past she transport both princes towards Belgium for their education.(1)

1. Of this ship exists a model in the Museum aan de Stroom at Antwerp. According to the specifications she was built in 1842-1845 at the shipyard of Van Geluwe, Brugge, Belgium as the Prince Royal, renamed 15 October 1845, fishery protection vessel 1846, used for voyages towards South America between 1847-1855, disarmed on 12 March 1862, used as target for submerged explosions and finally exploded off St. Maria fort on 18 August 1864. With a gross tonnage of 500 tons and as dimensions 33,60 x 9 x ,406 metres. Sailarea 1.118,819 square metres. Armed with 30-pd kobussen (?). Another Dutch newspaper Algemeen Handelsblad dated 25 November reported that her departure was planned on 10th December.
