German ironclad SMS Hansa 1868-1906


The first ironclad ever built in Germany. Laid down at the Imperial Dockyard, Danzig, Prussia in 1868, launched on 26 October 1872, commissioned in 18 May 1875, no longer actual service but used as guard ship and training ship for stokers and engineers since 1884, stricken on 6 August 1888, floating barracks at Kiel until 1905 and finally sold for 96.000 marks to be broken up in 1906. Building costs 3.665.000 marks.

Dimensions 71,73 (waterline)-73,5 (over all0 x 14,1 x 5,74 (fore)-6,8 (aft) metres or 235’3”-241’ x 46’ x 18’8”-22’ and a displacement of 3.950 tons/3.890 long tons/4.350 short tons (designed standard)-4.404 tons/4.334 long tons/4.855 short tons (prepared for war duties).
The horizontal single-expansion steam engine and four boilers supplied via one shaft 450 nhp allowing a speed of 12-12,7 (trial) knots. With a speed of 10 knots and her coal bunker capacity of 310 tons she ha a range of 1.330 nautical miles. Further more was she  fully rigged with a sail area of 1.760 square metres which however was removed in 1895-1896.
Her crew numbered 299 men. The armament consisted of 8-21cm/8.3” guns. The armour consisted of a 11,4-15,2cm/4.5”-6” ) thick belt and with the battery protected by 11,4cm/4.5” thick armour.
