Building of French battleship started according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1936 no. 3

Richelieu-class

An item referred to the Proceedings dated February 1936 reporting that the building of the 35.000 ton French battleship in the Salon dock, Brest, France was started.(1) While her designed length was too long for the dock could just 200 metres there be built, the remaining 42 metres were later added. On 1 January 1937 was the building of the second 35.000 tons battleship to be started in the new 300 metres long construction dock at t. Nazaire, France.(2)

The Richelieu of the Richelieu-class consisting of the Richelieu, Jean Bart and the two never completed Clemenceau and Gascogne, preceded by the Dunkerque-class and succeeded by the never realized Alsace-class, laid down on 22 October 1936, launched on 17 January 1939 and broken up at Genoa, Italy in 1968. Displacement 35.000 (standard)-47.548 (full load) tons.
2. The Jean Bart, of the Richelieu-class consisting of the Richelieu, Jean Bart and the two never completed Clemenceau and Gascogne, preceded by the Dunkerque-class and succeeded by the never realized Alsace-class, laid down by Chantiers de Penhoët, Saint Nazaire, France on 12 December 1936, launched on 6 March 1940 and broken up at Toulon, France in 1970. Displacement 35.000 (standard)-48.950 (full load after the Second World War) tons.
