German armoured frigate SMS Deutschland bunkered coal at Sabang, Dutch East Indies according to the Dutch newspaper De locomotief dated 6 January 1900

An item dated Singapore 6th reported that lacking the required facilities the German flagship Deutschland (1) decided to bunker coal at Poeloe Weh, Dutch East Indies (2)  instead of at Singapore. The edition dated 12th referred to the newspaper Singapore Freepress which complained that the Deutschland went to Poeloe Weh despite she lay berthed in the roads of Singapore for some days.(3)

1. Armoured frigate of the Kaiser-class, laid down by Samuda Brothers, London, England in 1872, launched on 12 September 1874, commissioned on 20 July 1875, renamed Jupiter as a harbour hulk on 22 November 1904 and sold to be broken up in 1910.
2. Sabang had an important coal bunkering station.
3. The Jaarboek van de Koninklijke Nederlandsche Zeemacht 1899-1900 mentioned a visit in January without supplying more details.
