Polish navy vessels the Polish harbour Gdansk according to a CIA report dated 5 May 1958




An item reported that in the Polish harbour Gdansk four submarines and there destroyers of the Polish navy were sighted/ On 7 December 1957 at 05:00 o’clock departed a Polish submarine of the Wilk-class. In the distance was a destroyer sighted heading to the submarine. Her armament consisted of 1 gun fore and one aft and on the main deck amidships torpedo tubes. She had two funnels, the forward one on a small distance of the bridge. In a comment on this item was said that she was possible a possible a Russian navy ship but more probably a Kronshtadt-class patrol vessel. Furthermore was doubt if the numbers for destroyers and submarines was correct. There was a coast guard or naval station described as a camp in which numerous men in naval type uniform were seen.

1. The project 122bis called by the NATO Kronshtadt class were Soviet designed submarine chasers, preceded by SO1-class and succeeded by Poti-class, exported in the 1950s worldwide serving in the navies of Albania, Bulgaria, China, Cuba, Poland, Romania and Russia. Length 52,24 x 6,55 x 2,2 metres or 171.4 x 21.5 x 7.2 feet.
