New Vichy French High Commissioner for the Pacific appointed according to the U.S. Joint Intelligence Committee. Daily summary dated 24 December 1941

An item referred to U.S. Amb. Vichy reporting that the French admiral Decoux was appointed as Vichy French High Commissioner in the Pacific. His task was to protect French interests if the Japanese would occupy Free French islands. The J.I.C. commented that in view of Decoux’s experience in French Indochina this would protection would be not a success.(1)

1. Jean Decoux (5 May 1884 Bordeaux, France-21 October 1963 Paris, France), Governor-General of French Indochina between July 1940-9 March 1945 on behalf of the Vichy French government, served in the navy between 1901-1949.
