The Chinese river gunboat Chian Heng in November 1927

The American consul at Harbin, China G.C. Hanson  sent with his report dated 29 November 1927 a list dealing with the Chinese gunboats on the Sungari River. It included the Chian Heng. She was purchased in Germany but had such a large draught that she was unable to go further on the river as Sansing due lacking enough water over  the Sansing Shoals situated just above that city. Reported to be in fair condition as far as cleanliness is but did not cruise much often caused by a chronic lacking coals and other supplies which was due to lacking the necessary finances. The gunboats seemed to have little success in preventing brigands attacking passing steamships and junks arrriving too late on the place of delict.Displacement 550 tons. Built of steel. Armament 12 guns: 1-12cm, 1-7.5cm, 4-47mm, 2 mortars, 4 Mai-ke-sin (Maxim?) machine guns. Former nationality ex-German. Former name unknown. Horsepower unknown.
