British river gunboat HMS Gannet 1927-1942, Nationalist Chinese Ying Shan 1942-1949 and Communist Chinese Nu Chiang 1949-1975


Launched by Yarrow &Co. Ld., Scotstoun, Glasgow, Scotland on 10 November 1927m commissioned in January 1928, damaged by a Japanese air attack off Hong Kong, went to Chongqing, China to be repaired, with her sister ship HMS Petrel handed over to the Nationalist Chinese Navy in February 1942, commissioned in March 1942, renamed Ying Shan, captured by Communist China on 30 November 1949, renamed Nu River/Nu Jiang/Nu Chiang and decommissioned in 1975.

Displacement 310 tons and as dimensions 56 x 8,8 x 0,98 metres or 177 (waterline)-184 2/3 (over all) x 29 x 3.2 feet. An armament of 2-3” anti aircraft guns and 8 machineguns. The machinery consisted of 4 Parsons Marine Steam Turbine Company geared turbines and 2 Admiralty 3-drum boilers delivering 2.250shp allowing a speed of 15 knots. Crew numbered in British service 55 men. Fuel oil bunker capacity 60 tons.
