Part of Town-class Southampton-subclass preceded by Arethusa-class succeeded by Crown Colony- and Dido-classes. Divided in three subclasses Southampton, Gloucester and Edinburgh. Originally to be named Minotaur- or M-class but in November 1934 called Town-class. Built as an answer on the Japanese Mogami-class cruisers. Pennant 24, since 1948 C24. Laid down by Vickers-Armstrong, High Walker shipyardwith yard number 5 on 31 January 1936, launched on 23 July 1936, commissioned on 25 August 1937, decommissioned in 1964 and broken up in 1967.
