British aircraft carrier HMS Courageous (1915) 1924-1939


Of the Courageous-class battle cruisers consisting of the Courageouws, Glorious and their half sister Furious. Laid down as a battle cruiser by Armstrong Whitworth 18 March 1915, launched 5 February 1916 and completed 4 November of the same year with as building costs £ 2,038,225. Her displacement was at that moment 19,180 long tons or 19,490 tons while load and 22,560 lomg tons or 22,922 tons while being at deep load. The dimensions were 786'9' (0ver aal) x 81 x 25'10" (deep load). Trial speed was 30,8 knots.

The rebuilding as an aircraftcarrier started 29 June 1924 at Deveonport as a result of the Washington Naval Treaty dated 1922 to increase the total tonnage of capital ships. The building costs of her conversions were £ 2,025,800. In fact was everything cut down to the main deck simply lefting a hull where on a new two story hangar was built, Each story had a hight of 16' and a length of 550'. From the upper hangar came man on a short flying-off deck situated below and forward of what was the main flight deck. The rebuilindg was completed 21 February 1928. She was sunk 17 September 1939 by the German submarine U-29 causing the death of 518 of her crewmembers.


Displacement as an aircraft carrier was 24,210 long tond 24,600 tons normal and 26,990 long tons or 27.420 tons while deep load with the dimensions 735'1,5" (between perpendiculars)-786'9"(over all) x 90'6" (waterline) x 27'75". The 4 Parsons geared steam turbines combined with 18 Yarrow boilers supplied 90,000 ship allowing a speed of 30 knots. With a medium speed of 16 knots was her range 5,860 nautical miles. Her crew numbered in 1938 totally 1.217 men (including 403 men fligt personnel). She still was armoured probably as a result of her origin with a 2-3"belt, 0.75-1" deck, 2-3' bulkheads and 1-1.5" torpedo bulkheads. Her armament consisted of 16x1-120mm anti aircraft guns and she carried with her 48 guns.
