French future battleship designs according to the Dutch newspaper Algemeen Handelsblad evening edition dated Friday 29 October 1909
The gun exercises with the Jéna off the harbour of Toulon with ‘sharp shots’ were ended. There were no details supplied although an anonymous source in the newspaper Matin said which conclusions were the result of the experiments. It became clear that new large warships were to be fitted out with armour with the same thickness over the whole length of the ship while heavy and light guns also were to be protected by well armour. The ammunition stores were to be as large as possible. The future battleships needed a speed of 22 knots and a displacement of 22,000-23,000 tons. Costs of such a battleship were more as 65.000.000 francs, much more as the budget of 48.000.000 francs for the Danton now on stocks.
