The large fuel-efficient container ships belonging to this class succeeded the Maersk E class. The South Korean yard Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. Ltd (DSME) received on 21 February 2011 from the A.P. Moller-Maersk Group the order for building 10 of this kind of vessels of which the first is to be handed over in 2014 and an option for another 20 (later decreased to a number of 10). The loading capacity of a Maersk Triple E container ship was increased with 4,800 containers compared with the Maersk E-class ships! With a deadweight of 165,000 metric tons are the dimensions 400 x 59 x 14,5 metres or 1,300’x 194’x 47’. Her large draught prevents entering harbours in the Americas or using the Panama Canal so the Suez Canal will be used for voyages between Europe and Asia. The twin Man diesel engines supplied 2x43,000 hp and allowed while driven two screws a designed speed of 19 knots. The slow-steaming principle is responsible for a 37% decrease of her fuel consumption.
