There were two kind of cranes used for this purpose, the so-called Goliath or gantry cranes or the so-called Titan or overhang cranes. The steam driven Titan type was able to lift and transport blocks with a weight of 40 tons with a maximum radius of 155 feet and lifting 95 feet. Engine and boiler mounted on the short end of the 175 feet long cantilever. The crane was mounted on 16 pairs of steel wheels.
