The American dock landing ship USS San Marcos 1944-1971 and the Spanish Galicia 1971-1989


Of the Casa Grande-class was the USS San Marcos (LSD-25) laid down at the Philadelphia Navy Yard on 1 September 1944, launched on 10 January 1945 and commissioned on 15 April of the same year. Decommissioned in the US navy on 1 July 1971 was she on the same date commissioned in the Spanish navy as the Galicia and bought by Spain on 1 August 1974, stricken in begin 1988 was she a year later broken up. Her pennant number was in the 80’s altered from TA 31 into L 31.

With a displacement of 4,032 (light draft)-7,930 (loaded) tons were her dimensions 457’9” (over all) x 72’2’x 8’2½” (light)-15’5½” fore and aft 10’½”  (light)-16’2” (loaded). The engines provided totally 7,400 shaft horse power allowing a speed of 17 knots and with a speed of 15 knots a range of 8,000 nautical miles. In American naval service numbered her crew 244 men joined by another 36 men to man the landing craft. She was armed with 1-5”dual purpose gun, 2-40mm quad anti aircraft guns, 2 twin 40mm anti aircraft guns and 16-20mm anti aircraft guns.
