The Mexican brig l’Aguila discovered papers for secret Spanish expedition according to the Nederlandsche Staatscourant dated 19 August 1824

Baltimore, USA 9 July. The Mexican armed brig l’Aguila captain Cottrell arrived after a voyage of 14 days coming from la Guayra with important tidings dealing with the latest events. Days before he left his station off Cadiz Cottrell received important tidings which were still secret although an extract was allowed. He met 5 May the Sardinian brig Themistocles which was underway from Havana towards Gibraltar and Genoa. When he approached her he saw a parcel floating behind in the water. One of her boats picked it up and they decided after a short investigation to go on board of the Themistocles where they found official letters of great value dealing with an expedition from Havana and Cadiz against South America.
