The Illustrated London News of begin February reported that as a result of the secret naval conference at Singapore decided was to establish a naval base at the Falklands Islands (Islas Malvinas) to maintain the British interest in the Far East in case of a war between Japan and the United States with as result that the Panama canal would be closed for British shipping.
