Belonged to the Southern (Confederate) Navy. Built as the packet boat Florida for the Mobile Mail Line at Mobile , Alabama in 1856. On 22 April 1861 was she inspected by captain Lawrence Rousseau of the Confederate States Navy is she was suitable for service within this navy. After his approval she was purchased two months later and rebuild as an armoured gunboat and commissioned before 12 November of the same year. During the Battle of Mobile Bay on 5 August 1864 later was she after a battle with the USS Metacomet captured and commissioned within the Union navy. Decommissioned on 16 July a year later was she sold during a auction to G.A. Hall to be used as a merchant ship. She was lost on 24 June 1868 off the mouth of the Brazos River , Galveston , Texas .
With a displacement of 590 tons were her dimensions 252 x 30 x 6 feet or 77 x 9,1 x 1,8 metres. Her speed was just 9 knots. The crew numbered between the 65 and 99 officers. The armament consisted of2-9” smootbore guns and one1-6.4”rifled gun. The armour consisted just of a 0.375” thickk iron deck plating.
