The disaster with the French ship of the line Trocadero according to a Dutch local news paper dated 31 March and 2 April 1836

Vlissingen (=Flushing) in the province Zeeland (=Zealand), nowadays still a port including a very important shipyard which works world wide, building warships for the Netherlands and other countries. This shipyard is a direct descendant of the naval yard in that place. In the local news paper named Vlissingse Courant were the following small news items published.

In the edition dated 31 March 1836 was the news published that 23 March the ship of the line Trocadero (1) completely was lost due to a fire while docked at Toulon. According to the last news there was no danger for the arsenal or other ships.

In the edition dated 2 April an official French government bulletin announced that the fire on the 120 guns ship was caused while heating the new copper which suddenly catch fire and which couldn’t be put out. According to a French news paper the damage was 3 million francs; in the opinion of the Dutch journalist a somewhat exaggerated amount.
