Dutch gunboat Hr.Ms. Johan Maurits van Nassau 1931-1940

Laid down at the yard of the Koninklijke Maatschappij De Schelde at Flushing, Netherlands on 13 July 1931, launched on 20 August 1932, commissioned on 5 April 1933 as a flotilla leader, around 1935 classified as a gunboat. Specially designed for service in the Dutch West Indies. With her gunfire stopped she with success on 13 May 1940 the German troops off Kornwernerzand at the Afsluitdijk preventing these troops coming from Friesland to enter Noord-Holland. She was during the bombardment lying at open sea and not visible for the German troops which only saw grenades falling down without knowing from where these came. When she tried the next day to escape to England was she sunk by a German air attack.

With a displacement of 1.537 tons were her dimensions 78,65 (over all) x 11,60 x 3,75 metres. The two triple expansion engines and 4 Yarrlow boilers supplied 2.100 ihp and while driving two screws allowed s speed of 15 miles. Her armament consisted of 3-15cm guns, 2-40mm machineguns and 4-12,7mm machine guns. The decks and bridge were proetced by 25mm armour. Her crew numbered 127 men.
