Dutch merchant bark ship Provincie Groningen launched at Groningen, Netherlands according to the Dutch newspaper Zierikzeesche Courant dated Friday 31 March 1837

On 22 March was at the yard Noorderwerf of shipbuilder H.J. Limborgh at Groningen with success the bark ship Provincie Groningen of around 370 tons launched. She was build for account of some inhabitants of the province and with master J.H. Brandt destined for the Dutch East Indies trade shipping. The launching was sighted by a large number of spectators while it was the first time that such a large ship with that destination was build at Groningen.

The building was also reported in the Dutch magazine titled Tijdschrift ter bevordering van Nijverheid, Haarlem, 1837 p. 499. Mr. jhr. mr. J. Hora Siccama van de Harkstede mentioned as an example of the increasing industry in the province Groningen that on 22 March 1837 at the yard of shipbuilder H.J. Limborgh a very beautiful of 225 Java-lasten destined for the Dutch East Indies trade shipping was launched.

1. In 1826 was the standard to calculate the cargo capacity of a ship the so-called roggelast (rogge=rye) of 2.075 kilo’s. In 1827 made the Nederlandsche Handels Maatschappij a list of all colonial products with their weights corresponding with the space needed for one roggelast. This became known as the Java last. For instance the weight of a Java last tea was 1.000 kilo, of pepper 1.600, of rice 2.000 and of coffee 1.500 kilo (in the practice in fact 1.800).
