For years was in the Netherlands a magazine published dealing with maritime affairs. It contained notes dealing with the Royal Dutch Navy and the Dutch merchant shipping/trade, but also supplied information dealing with foreign navies, especially of France and Great Britain. Occasionally we can find information dealing with the navies of other countries Russia, United States or even Mexico. A Russian squadron left 30 September 1859 Cronstadt towards Amur, Asia. The squadron was commanded by captain Kournetzof and consisted of 3 screw steam corvettes of 10 guns and 180 hp, with a crew numbered 152 men and 3 clippers of 6 guns and 120 hp and crews of 130 men. The squadron was to be followed soon by a 46-gun stream frigate of 360 hp and with a crew of 480 men.
