Spanish naval schooner Cantela captured by British Narcissus on 18 August 1807

According to a letter dated 19 August 1807, written by the commanding officer of the British Narcissus Charles Malcolm, the Spanish schooner of war Cantela was captured 18 August after being chased for 10 hours on the position Latitude 45°20’North and Longitude 10°20’ West. Although pierced for 12 guns, she was armed with just 6 guns and a crew of 29 men. Her commanding officer was the Spanish naval lieutenant don Joseph de Toledo. The Spanish managed to threw overboard dispatches destined for South America, the guns and a boat, all to prevent capture. The Cantela left Rivadeo 16 August destined for the first harbor on her voyage. According to Malcolm she was a ‘fine copper-bottomed vessel, perfectly new’, out on her first voyage, sailing well and in his opinion suitable for British naval service.
