The Turkish and Egyptian navies according to the Dutch newspaper Vlissingse Courant dated 30 July 1839

Tidings from Vienna dated the 19th based on received letters, mentioned the rumours that the Turkish fleet despite the orders of the new sultan left the Dardanelles and destroyed the French fleet almost completely. Tidings directly from Constantinople dated the 8th didn’t confirmed this news. New official tidings from Constantinople, however which were published on the day of departure of the courier, confirmed the unexpected departure of the Turkish fleet. The reasons were unknown to the sultan and the government couldn’t explain what happened. The Kapudan Pasha was crying when he got the news of the death of sultan Mahmoud when he announced it to his officers and sailors. He asked their unconditional loyalty to the new sultan. In less official tidings was spoken van treason and the rumours were that he sailed to Mehemet, Pasha of Egypt to offer his service. The next thing what would happened was that the Kapudan Pasha would command a combined Turkish-Egyptian fleet, sail to Constantinople and overthrown the government, which consisted of his opponents.
