Dutch clipper frigate Koffijboom 1864-1868


Build in 1864-1865 at the yard De Noord of C.&J. Smit Czn. At Alblasserdam on behalf of master-owner Fokko Fokkens (1) of Delfshaven. She was build of wood and coppered with a tonnage of 1300 tons or 688 lasten and as dimensions 52,43 x 9 x 6,20 metres. Her call sign was PHLC. Her flag pennant no. R 53 referred to the Maatschappij Tot Nut Der Zeevaart of Rotterdam, Netherlands. She was according to tidings dated 20 November 1868 burned until the waterline when she was lying at Surabaya. At that moment was her master A. van Galen with flag pennant R 43.

The Dutch newspaper De Locomotief: Samarangsch handels- en advertentieblad dated 20 November 1868 reported that a telegram was received dated Surabaya 20 November that she was burned while lying there. Another Dutch newspaper Algemeen Handelsblad dated 19 December reported in an item dated Batavia 29 November that she was burned at Surabaya with as master A. van Galen. The newspaper Dordrechtse courant dated 24 December published an item dated Amsterdam 21 December using a telegram dated Surabaya 9 December reporting that the wreck with cargo was sold for ƒ 2,500.

A list of ships dated 1 January 1864 published in Verhandelingen en Berigten betrekkelijk het Zeewezen etc., Amsterdam 1864 reported that she was being build by J. Smit Cz. On behalf of F. Fokkens and that she measured 1,275 tons.

1. The website http://www.leventboz.net/blog.asp?id=32 supplies more details about Fokke Fokkens (Groningen 12 May 1802) although just likes other sources on the internet is said that the Koffijboom was build in 1865. He is mentioned as owner until 1868.
