American side wheel steam river gunboat/cotton clad CSS later USS General Bragg 1862-1865


Build as the Mexico in 1850 at the yard of Westervelt, New York and purchased by the Confederate forces on 15 January 1862 and commissioned on 25 March of the same year. As the CSS General Bragg part of the Confederate part of the Mississippi River but captured by the Union forces when she run aground during the battle of Memphis on 6 June 1862 and commissioned as the USS General Bragg was she finally decommissioned on 24 July 1865 and sold on 1 September that year. She was renamed Mexico as a merchant ship and in 1870 sold abroad.. With a tonnage of 1,043 tons were her dimensions 208’ x 32’8” x 12’ and a depth of 15’. The one beam steam engine and one boiler allowed a speed of 10 knots. The armament in her Union Navy service consisted of 1-30pdr muzzle loading rifle, 1-32pdr gun and 1-32pdr muzzle loading rifle.
