Brazilian transport Mercurio destroyed by rebels according to the Dutch newspaper Middelburgsche Courant dated 27 February 1894

An item reported that tidings from Rio de Janeiro were received that the battery at Ponto Madama loyal to the president destroyed the rebelling transport Mercurio. When she sunk exploded the boilers. Among her crew were many losses.

1. Between 1893 and 1894 mutinied parts of the Brazilian navy against the Brazilian president. These mutinies are known as the Brazilian Naval Revolts or Revoltas da Armada with as main leaders the admirals Custodio de Mello and Saldanha Gama causing large losses of men and ships. In September 1903 broke the mutiny or revolt out at Rio de Janeiro.
