The merchant marine in the Dutch East Indies according to the annual account over 1863 dealing with the Dutch East Indies

According to this account numbered the Dutch Indies ships at the end of that year totally 362 ships and vessels with a total measurement of 34.025½ last divided over
13 steamships totally 1,658½ last
11 ships totally 3,147 last
133 barks totally 20.110 last
38 brigs totally 3,719½ last
126 schooners totally 4,278½ last
41 cutters and other vessels including two steam dug-out canoes of 4 and 14 last totally 1,112 last. Of these ships and vessels 193 had as homeport Java and Madura totally measuring 23.538½ last. A year when this merchant marine numbered 382 ships and vessels with totally 38.706½ last was the total number for Java and Madura 213 ships with totally 27.740¼ last.

First sea certificates were given in 1863 for 22 ships namely two steamships, one ship, one bark, 17 schooners and one cutter, totally 978 last to ten Europeans, two Chinese, three Arabs and 7 natives respectively for 436, ½, 143, 207½ and 191 last. Of these ships were six build abroad. A year earlier were first sea certificates given for 35 ships totally 3.484½ last of which ten were build abroad.
