Russian tanker Tsjernov seized by Spanish cruiser Canarias according to the Dutch newspaper Algemeen Handelsblad dated 3 July 1938

An item dated Rome 2 July referred to tidings received from Saragossa that the Nationalist Spanish cruiser Canarias arrived at Malaga with the Russian tanker Tsjernov. The Tsjernov was hold up off Valencia while she was transporting oil for the Republicans. Another newspaper Bataviaasch Nieuwsblad dated the 5th confirmed the item although spelling her name as Chernoff. She transported 62,000 hectolitre oil on that moment. Another newspaper De Sumatra Post dated 22 July 1936 published an item dated Lisbon 21 July reporting that a Russian tanker armed with two guns was involved in the bombardment of Moscow.

1. Between 17 July 1936 and 1 April 1939 suffered Spain from a civil war. The Nationalists supported by Germany, Italy and Portugal defeated the Republicans supported by the Soviet Union, Mexico and both sides by a large number of volunteers coming from all over the world.
