Spain preparing naval actions against Independents according to the Nederlandsche Staatscourant dated 11 September 1818

An item dated Savannah, United States, 9 July reported the arrival of the Venezuelan privateer Carony master William Sanders on Sunday evening. She had left on 27 June the island Margareta with the fleet commanded by admiral Brion and the American corvette USS Hornet. The admiral was heading towards the Swedish island St. Barthlemy where some transports were lying with on board 2,000 men recently arrived from England and to be escorted towards the Orinoque. The Spanish were fitting out an expedition for a combined sea-land attack and admiral Brion was preparing to go in the same direction. The Carony brought with her letters from Brion for the Venezuelan minister at Philadelphia and letters from the captain and some officers of the Hornet. The Hornet was according to Sanders ordered to go towards Copenhagen. The American representative for the Independents Mr. Irvine had left the Hornet and went on board of Brions ship. The Carony was destined towards New York but fought last Thursday with a Spanish corvette and could only escaped due to her speed but had to visit Savannah being heavily damaged. According to rumours arrived at Havana 2 or 3 Spanish ships loaded with money coming from Santa Cruz while escorted by a British frigate.
