European merchant trade shipping needed warships escorts in the Levant according to the Nederlandsche Staatscourant dated 20 March 1823

Smyrna, 1 February. The French brigantine les Bons Amis underway with a cargo of victuals from Alexandria towards Zante was captured in the waters of Candia by a Greek warship and forced to go to the island Stampalia where her cargo was seized being Turkish property according to 4 Turkish on board of he ships. The result was that French and other European merchant ships had to depend on escorts from warships.
