In the The Army and Navy Chronicle of 5 July 1838
is a small note published dealing with the naval strength of the Greek Royal
Navy, sadly enough without mentioning names of the involved ships. Still the
note is interesting enough to publish on this weblog.
One corvette with 22 guns, 1 brig with 12 guns, 1 with 10
guns, 2 schooners of each 10 guns, 2 schooners each of 4 guns, 2 cutters each
of 4 guns, 1 cutter serving as the royal yacht, 12 gunboats each of 2 guns, 2 transport
barks each of 2 guns, 1 transport brig of 2 guns, for the postal service were 1
steam vessel, 2 schooners and 2 cutters available. Totally were 32 vessels in
actual service. At the arsenal of Poros was men busy with the building of a 26
guns corvette, 1 steam vessel (120 hp) and 1 dredging vessel. The personnel was
divided in: 4-1st class captains, 7-2nd class captains, 80-3rd class captains,
102-1st class Lieutenants. 267-2nd class Lieutenants, 3 surgeons, 6-1st class
pursers, 36-2nd class pursers, 160 warrant officers and 756 sailors.
