The Egyptian and Turkish navies in the Mediterranean according to the Nederlandsche Staatscourant dated 21 May 1827

The Augsburg’s Algemeine Zeitung published tidings coming from Alexandria dated 11 April. A squadron departed 2 April Alexandria bringing the new Pasha of Candia towards his post. The next day one ship returned due losing her masts in a nightly storm. The Pasha of Egypt was appointed as commanding officer of the fleet which was to act against the Greeks. The Egyptian fleet which was waiting since some weeks in the harbour of Alexandria was strengthened by a Turkish squadron of 17 sails, including 4 ships of the line. There were 20 ships more coming from Constantinople expected, so that for the definite expedition more as 100 ships and vessels were available. Rumours were that 11.000 men of the new troops were to be embarking and that Hydra was the destination. The Pasha arrived 4 or 5 days ago but it’s feared that the fleet was not ready within the 3-4 months due to lacking money, the disorder and worse condition of the fleet and the lacking disobedience dealing with the orders of the pasha. They feared for an attack by Greece fire ships commanded by Lord Cochrane. In the meantime there were still some French and British warships in or around Alexandria.
