Dutch children emigrated with the Dutch merchant ship Joan towards South Africa according to the Dutch newspaper Weekblad van Den Helder en het Nieuwediep dated 3 August 1857

An item dated Den Helder the 1st reported that the morning of the day before 40 children with the first train departed Amsterdam towards Rotterdam to go on board of the merchant ship Joan captain C. Laseur destined towards Cape Town. There would a commission take care of them and supplying work. The experiment with the first group had been successful and many parents wanted to sent their children. However there were just a few vacant places and the journalist hoped that on time a third group would be sent.
