French naval shipbuilding since 1870 according to the Dutch newspaper Tilburgsche Courant dated 29 January 1899

An item referred to an account of the French department of navy dealing with the strength of the fleet in the period 1870-end 1897. In 1870 possessed France 488 ships with a total value of 465.000.000 French francs. In January 1881 were the figures respectively 491 and 698 million, 1 January 1899 486 respectively 1.181 million. Between 1870 and 1887 were 311 vessels and between 1887 and 1898 another 268 stricken. In the last nine years were 116 newly built warships launched and 213 ordered. Of those latter were begin 1899 already 152 seaworthy.
