Ferdinand Maximilian

An item dated 21st reported that in the afternoon of the 20th the Italian fleet consisting of 23 ships including 12 armoured frigates off Lissa was attacked by the Austrian squadron. During the battle was a large Italian armoured frigate rammed and sunk by the Austrian armoured frigate Ferdinand Maximilian and a second Italian frigate exploded. In both cases were no survivors. Another Austrian ship attacked by four Italian armoured frigates sunk one and repelled the other three. There were 22 men killed and 82 wounded. The Austrian ships were already fitted out for new fights suffering just little damage. Another item claimed that the armoured ship Re Italia was lost in the begin of the battle and the main part of her crew rescued by the frigate Emmanuele. The armoured gunboat Palestro was set in fire but her commanding officer and crew refused to abandon her and afterwards she exploded. Other items claimed that the Italian fleet still ruled the waters and that the Austrian navy suffered heavily.
