Dutch submarine Hr.Ms. K I 1910-1920




Building number 142. Her building at the Kon.Mij. De Schelde, Vlissingen, Netherlands was ordered on 19 October 1910 although the contract was not earlier signed as in December that year. Her keel was laid down on 16 September 1911 in the barrack at the North side, plating fitted on 12 January 1913, launched on 25 May 1913, technical trial on 29 October 1913 and 12 June 1914 (at the same time the official trial), on 19 June 1914 the diving test and delivered on 12 July and the 20th departed she towards Den Helder. Commissioned on 15 July. Departed on 12 September 1916 towards the Dutch East Indies. Finally stricken on 1 October 1927. Building time 45 months in weeks of 60 hours. Costs completely fitted out when she was for the first time commissioned ƒ 1.330.000,--. Designed by Whitehead=Hay at Fiume. Dimensions 44,80 (between perpendiculars)-45,20 (waterline)-48,645 metres (over all) x 4,32 x 4,22 (hold) metres, a tonnage of 3.024 tons, deadweight of 72,8 tons and as displacement 332,8 (surfaced)-385,9 (submerged). Fitted out with 2x8 cylinder MAN (Maschinenfabriek Augsburg-Nürnberg) diesel engines supplying 2x850 ahp allowing a surfaced speed of 16,775 knots (trial) and 2x157 ahp electric engines allowing a submerged speed of 11 8-knots further more she ahd 144 batteries. Fuel bunker capacity 16,1 tons. Range with a speed of 11 knots 1.700-2.250 miles and submerged was she able to continue for 3¾ hours a speed of 8,9 miles. Her crew numbered 17 men. Her armament consisted of 2-45cm torpedo tubes in the bow and one 45cm stern torpedo tube and she could carry with her 45cm torpedoes. Decommissioned in 1928.

Paid by the Dutch Department of Colony using the Dutch East Indies where she was to serve but to be manned by the Royal Netherlands Navy. Towed by the Dutch tug Witte Zee in 1916 to her final destination.
