French submarine Saphire (Q44) sunk in the Dardanelles according to the Dutch newspaper Nieuwe Tilburgsche Courant dated 24 January 1916

An item dated Paris, France 22nd referred to a statement of the American ambassador at Constantinople, Turkey Turkish vessels 10 crewmembers saved of the French submarine Saphire which sunk in the Dardanelles. The survivors were brought to Constantinople. (1)

1. Pennant Q44. Launched on 24 November 1903, laid down in 6 February 1908 at Ka Seyne-sur-Mer, commissioned on 10 December 1910 and sunk on 15 January 1915. Of the Émeraude-class designed by Gabriel Maugas with as dimensions 13,69 x 1,19 x 1,15 metres or 44.90 x 3.90 x 3,76 feet, a displacement of 392 (surfaced)-425 (submerged) tons, a crew of 25 men and an armament of 6-45cm torpedo tubes (4 bow, 2 stern). She was scuttled by her own crew to prevent capture. Totally 13 of the 29 men on board survived the incident. Diving depth 40 metres. An armament of 6-45cm torpedo tubes and in 1917 1-4,7cm gun.
