Battleships essential for British defence according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1937 no. 4

An item referred to the magazine R.U.S.I. dated May 1937 reporting that at the end of 1937 5 battleships for the British Royal Navy were being built. That was against the prophecy of air force experts which expected that the aircraft would ruled the world and make battleships fossils. Sir Samuel Hoare (1) made clear that the prophecy was nonsense and that air force and battleships were essential parts of the national defence. The navy and particular the battleships became the most unlikely target for air forces of the enemy although now the merchant shipping needed more anti aircraft warfare especially in narrow waters. For the new battleships were 18 designs made and numerous experiments executed to test the strength of the building material against explosions.
