An item referred to the
Journal of the R.U.S.I. which magazine published an extract of the report of Chaumet (1) written on behalf of the French naval budget. According to Chaume was the French navy far weaker as was expected. Officially was she numbering several ships which actually the reality was something else. His criticism was based on the actual worth for a battleship of 20 years and for torpedo vessels just 10 years, The real France naval strength consisted in his opinion of 15 battleships 6-Patria design, 3-St. Louis and further more the Bouvet, Suffren, Massena, Charles-Martel, Jauréguiberry and Carnot. 5 coastal defence ships consisting of the Henry IV and 4-Bouvines design, 21 armoured cruisers, 64 destroyers, 162 torpedo boats, 30 submersibles and 38 submarines.
