Chilean Almirante Latorre-class

Of the Rivadavia-class consisting of the Rivadavia and the Moreno. Built as response of Brazil building the Minas Geraes-class (1). Chile responded on the Brazilian and Argentinean new building of dreadnoughts by ordering in the United Kingdom the building of the Almirante Latorre-class, consisting of two dreadnoughts.(2) Laid down by the New York Shipbuilding, Camden, New Jersey, USA on 9 July 1910, launched on 23 September 1911, completed on 15 February 1915, part of the reserve in 1923, modernized in the USA 1923-1924 including from coal to oil fuelling, decommissioned in 1949, served as barracks, prison ship in 1955, stricken on 1 October 1956, sold on 11 January 1957 to the Yawata Iron and Steel Company, towed by the Dutch tugs Clyde and Ocean Moreno towards Japan where she arrived on 17 August 1957.

Displacement 27.900 (standard)-30.600 (full load) tons and as dimensions 178 (between perpendicular)-181,28 (over all) x 29,985 x 8,446 metres or 585-594.9 x 98,4½ x 27.8½ feet. The 3-shaft Curtiss geared turbines and 18 Babcock&Wilcox boilers supplied 40.000 ship allowed a speed of 22,567 (trials) knots and with a speed of respectively 11 and 15 knots a range of 11.000 respectively 7.000 nautical miles. Original armament 12-30,5cm/12” guns, 12-15,2cm/6” guns, 16-10,2c,/4” guns and 2-53,3cm/21” torpedo tubes. Between 1924-1926 were the 4” guns replaced by 4-7,6cm/3” anti aircraft guns and 4-3pd guns. The armour consisted of a 35cm-30cm/10-12” thick belt and the turrets, casemates and conning tower protected by respectively 30,4cm/12”, 15,9-23,8cm/6 1/5-9 1/3” and 30cm/12”.

1. The Minas Geraes-class consisted of the Minas Geraes and the Sao Paulo, the building of the 3rd one, the Rio de Janeiro, was cancelled despite she was already laid down. Displacement 19.281 (normal)-21.200 (full load) tons and as dimensions 160 (waterline)-165 (over all) x 25 x 76 (mean)-8,5 metres (full load) or 530-543 x 83 x 25-28. Armament 6x2-30,5cm/12”/45 guns, 22-12cm/4.7”/50 guns and 8-3,7cm/3pd guns. Speed 21 knots.
2. The Almirante Latorre-class consisted of the Almirante Latorre and the Almirante Cochrane with a displacement of 28.600 (standard)-32,120 tons and as dimensions 201 (over all) x 28 x 8,8 metres or 661 x 92 x 29 feet. Speed 22,75 knots. Armament 10-35,5cm/14” guns, 16-16,2cm/6” guns, 2-7,6mm/3” anti aircraft guns, 4-3pd guns and 4-53,3cm/21” submerged torpedo tubes.
