Italian battleship Ammiraglio do Saint Bon 1893-1920

Ammiraglio d Saint Bon-class


Laid down at the Venice Shipyard on 18 July 1893, launched on 29 April 1897, sea trials off La Spezia in January 1901, commissioned on 1 February 1901, trials on 5 and 23 May 1901, completed on 24 May 1901, harbour defence ship at Venice since Italian participation in the First World War, floating anti-aircraft battery at Venice after April 1916 until November 1918, stricken on 18 June 1920 and sold to be broken up.

Part of the Ammiraglio d Saint Bon-class battleships, designed by Benedetto Brin, consisted of the Ammiraglio di Saint Bon and the Emanuele Filiberto. Preceded by the Re Umberto-class and succeeded by the Regina Margherita-class. The design was not really a success.

Displacement 10.244 (normal)-10.700 (full load) tons and as dimensions 105 (waterline)-111.8 (over all) x 21 x 8 metres or 344-366.9½ x 59.3½ x 25.2½ feet. The 2-shaft triple expansions steam engines and 12 cylindrical boilers supplied 14.296 ihp allowing a speed of 18.3-19,2 (trial) knots and with a speed of 10 knots a range of 5.500 nautical miles. Their crew numbered 557 men. The Harvey armour consisted of a 24,9cm/9.8’ thick belt and side, a 7cm/2.75” thick deck with the turrets, casemates and conning tower protected by respectively 24,9cm/9.8”, 15cm/5.9” and 24,9cm/9.8”. The armament consisted of 2x2-25,4cm/10”/40 Armstrong guns, 8x1-15,2cm/6”/40 guns, 8-11,9cm/4.7”/40 guns, 8-5,7cm/2.2”/43 6-pd guns, 2x1-3,7cm/1.5”/20 guns and 4z1-45cm/17.7” torpedo tubes.
