Preliminary design of an American battle scout dated October 1915


A scout cruiser which was called a battle scout due to her size. Dimensions 800’ (waterline) x 94’ (waterline) x 27’’6” and a displacement of 32.000 tons. Normal displacement of 32.000 tons: hull complete with hull fittings 13.655 tons, protection 4.127 tons, steam engineering 6.970 tons, reserve feed 2/3 supply 1.455 tons, battery, ammunition and 2/3 ordnance stores 2.113 tons, equipment and 2/3 equipment stores 1.980 tons and oil fuel 2/3 full supply 1.700 tons. With a speed of 12 knots was her range 12.000 nautical miles. Horsepower was 109.000 ehp allowing a speed of 35 knots. 13 Boiler rooms. The armament consisted of 2x3 and 1x2-14” breech loading guns (1x3 aft ,1x3&1x2 fore superfiring), 12-6” quick firing guns, 4-3” anti aircraft guns and 4-21” submerged torpedo tubes. The armour consisted of a main belt with a maximum width of 19’6” , a thickness of 5” and 7’depth below the waterline. The turrets were protected by 4” (rear)-4.5” (sides)-5” (top)-6” (port) thick armour, barbettes by 5”, the conning tower by 5” (proper and tube) just like the fire control tower and there was a protective deck of 2”.
