German frigate FGS Karlsruhe (F212) 1984-

Part of the Bremen-class consisting of the Bremen, Niedersachsen, Rheinland-Pfalz, Köln, Karlsruhe, Augsburg and Lübeck, succeeded by the F15-class frigates. Laid down at Howaldtswerke, Kiel, Germany on 10 March 1981, launched on 8 January 1982 and commissioned on 19 April 1984.

General technical specifications of the Bremen-class. With a displacement of 3.680 tons and as dimensions 130,50 x 14.60 x 6,30 metres or 428.2 x 47.11 x 20.8 feet. The machinery consisted of 2 MTU 20V956 TB92 diesel engines delivering totally 10.920hp and 2 General Electric LM2550 gas turbines supplying totally 51.000hp allowing a speed of 30 knots. With a speed of 18 knots a range of over the 4.000 nautical miles. Crew numbered 202 persons (included 20 persons for the helicopters). Armament consisted of 1-7,6cm-OTO Melara dual purpose gun, 2-27mm Mauser MLG27 auto cannons, 1-8cell launcher of 16 Sea Sparrow surface to air missiles, 2-MK49 launchers each with 21 Ram anti-ship missiles, 2-quadruple Harpoon anti ship missile launchers and 232,4cm/12,75” Mark 32 torpedo launchers for 8 DM 4A1 or Mark46 torpedoes.
