US Navy designed 40.000+ tons battleships according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1938 no. 5


An item referred to the magazine Marine Rundschau reporting that unofficial sources claimed that the US Navy designed new battleships of 43.245 tons with a main armament of 45cm/17.7” guns. At the moment were 2-35.000 ton battleships laid down, which were not to be redesigned. Probably was under the 1939 program for the first time the building of battleship larger as 40.000 tons planned.(1)

1. The South Dakota-class preceded y the North Carolina-class had a main armament of 3x3-40,6cm/16”/45cal Mark 6 guns and a displacement 35.000 (standard)-44.519 (full load) tons. In March 1937 was started with designing this class resulting in an approval on 4 January 1938.
