Building ordered on 17 April 1925, laid down by Echevarrieta y Larringa yard, Cadiz, Spain on 21 November 1925, launched on 5 March 1927, commissioned in August 1928, maiden voyage started on 19 April 1928, homeport Cadiz, Spain. Was first to be named Minerva but by royal decision dated 17 April 1925 changed in Juan Sebastian de Elcano. Speed 13 (engine-17,5 (under sail) knots. Crew numbers 300 men excluded 90 midshipmen. Armament consists of 2-5,7cm ceremonial gun mounts. Displacement 3.673 tons, gross tonnage 2.478 tons, deadweight 3.750 tons and as dimensions 94,13 (without bowsprit)-113,1 x 48,5 x 7 x 48,5 (height) metres or 371 x 43.0 x 23 x 159 feet. sail area 2.870 square metres/30.900 square feet.
