Dutch government of the Netherlands New Guinea arming police vessels of the Mimika type in 1954

A letter dated Hollandia, Netherlands New Guinea 21 December 1954 sent by the Commanding Officer in Nieuw-Guinea (CZMNG) to the Minister of Marine at The Hague, Netherlands. He was informed that after a request of the Governor the seven operational government patrol vessels of the Algemene Politie [General Police] were to be armed with 1-2cm machinegun.(1) Mountings and machineguns were to be supplied by the Royal Netherlands Navy and which were stored in the navy barracks at Hollandia. Strangely enough was the government responsible for fitting out although naval personnel would take care of the periodical maintenance of the arms and mountings. The necessary ammunition was for the time being supplied by the navy to the Algemene Politie. Although originally the police would self order the needed ammunition it was now decided that the navy order and shipped the ammunition with sending the bill to the government. The gunners on board of the patrol vessels were already trained by the navy.

It was thought that yearly for each barrel were to be supplied 3 boxes each with 180 bullets war ammunition including one tracers and 5 boxes each of 180 bullets exercise ammunition including 2 tracers. The minister was asked to sent a specification of the ammunition.

Furthermore was reported that the police vessels after being armed were a welcomed increase of the maritime forces, which was needed. If necessary were the police vessels handed over to the navy just like happened during the Etna Bay infiltration.

Note
1. According to a letter of the Minister of Navy sent to the CZMNG dated The Hague 24 March 1955 were the 7 vessels already available in the Netherlands Nieuw Guinea of the Mimika type.
