American transport USS General Alava participated in the eclipse expedition in the Dutch East Indies according to the Dutch newspaper De Sumatra Post dated 30 May 1901

An item reported that the American warship General Alava (1) which transported the American eclipse expedition on the 18th from Manila, Philippines towards Padang, Dutch East Indies, arrived at Tandjong-Priok, Dutch East Indies for victuals. Further more had the American consul at Padang, the Dutchman [C.G.] Veth of the firm Geb. Veth invited her commanding officer to experiment with Ombiliën coal which seemed to be successful. Another Dutch newspaper Het nieuws van den dag voor Nederlandsch-Indië reported that the expedition was ended and that the General Alava and the Pigmy (2)left Emmahaven, Dutch East Indies on 28th May.

1. Of the General Alava-class general cargo ships, built by A. McMillan&Sons, Dumbarton, Scotland on 1895, handed over by the US War Department on 21 February 1900, commissioned in the US Navy on 9 March 1900, served in the Philippines as transport and lighthouse tender, decommissioned at Shanghai, China on 28 June 1929 and sunk while used as gunnery target off the Asiatic Coast on 17 July 1929. According to the Dutch Jaarboek van de Koninklijke Nederlandsche Zeemacht 1900-1901 visited the USS General Alava (AG-5) Padang, Dutch East Indies between 4 April-6 May and 13-28 May 1901, Sabang, Dutch East Indies between 20-21 June 1901 and Tandjong Priok, Dutch East Indies between 8-11 May and 31 May-1 June 1901.
2. According to the Dutch Jaarboek van de Koninklijke Nederlandsche Zeemacht 1900-1901 visited the British gunboat HMS Pigmy visited Padang, Dutch East Indies between 9 April 28 May 1901. Launched at the Sheerness Dockyard, England on 27 July 1888. Of the Pigmy-class composite screw gunboats/1st class gunboats consisting of the Pigmy, Pheasant, Partridge, Peacock, Pigeon and Plover.
