Austrian armoured frigate SMS Salamander 1861-1896


Of the Drache-class armoured frigates/broadside ironclads wit as sister ship Drach preceded by the Kaiser Max-class. Laid down by Stabilimento Tecnico, Triestino, Italy in February 1861, launched on 22 August 1861, completed in May 1862, stationary guard ship by 1875, when it became clear that she was no longer seaworthy due to a deteriorated wooden hull, was she stricken on 18 March 1883, converted into a mine storage hulk and broken up between 1895-1896.

Displacement 3.160 tons and as dimensions 80,1 x 13,94 x 6,8 metres or 230.0 x 45.9 x 22.4 feet. The horizontal steam engine and 4 boilers supplied 2.060ihp via her ingle screw allowing a speed of 10,5 knots. Three masts, barque-rigged and one funnel. Crew numbered 346 men. The original armament consisted of 10-48pd smoothbore guns and 18-24pd rifled muzzle loading guns to which 108pd and 1-4pd landing guns were added. In 1867 replaced by 10-7”/17,9cm riffled muzzle loading guns and 18-24pd rifled muzzle loading guns. Fitted out with a so-called ram bow. Armour consisted of a waterline wrought iron made belt with a thickness of 11,5cm/4.5”.
