British cruiser HMS Doris and gunboat Widgon bound for the Cape Colony according to the Dutch newspaper Algemeen Handelsblad dated 12 July 1899


An item dated Lourenço Marques [Maputo, Mozambique] dated 11th reported the arrival of the British cruiser HMS Doris (1) and the gunboat Widgeon(2). On board of the Doris was rear admiral Harris (3), commander-in-chief of the navy station in the Cape Colony, South Africa.

1. Of the Eclipse-class 2nd class protected cruisers, consisting of the Doris, Diana, Dido, Eclipse, Isis, Juno, Minerva, Talbot and Venus, preceded by the Astraea-class and succeeded by the Arrogant-class. Laid down at N.C.&A. Barrows (Naval Construction and Armaments Company/Vickers) on 29 August 1894, launched on 13 March 1896, completed for service on 18 November 1897 and sold at Bombay 20 February 1919 to be broken up.
2. Of the Redbreast-class screw steam gunboats consisting of the Magpie, Redbreastm Redpole, Ringdove. Lapwing, Goldfinch, Thursh, Widgeon and Sparrow. Launched by Pembroke Dockyard on 9 August 1899 and finally sold to Castle to be scrapped at Charlton on 15 May 1905.
3. Sir Robert Hastings Penruddock Harris (12 October 1843-25 August 1926), ended his career in the rank of admiral.
